A country's human development profile is generally captured through the United Nations (UN) Human Development Index (HDI) which ranges in value from 0 to 1.
The HDI stems from a capabilities approach to development and emphasises the centrality of human well-being to our understanding of development.
Our definition of the Global South includes countries with low and medium levels of human development as indicated by the HDI.
Moldova, Botswana, Gabon, Paraguay, Turkmenistan, and Egypt all had HDIs greater than 0.69 (but less than 0.699) and are on the verge of 'graduating' from the Global South.
